An enigmatic bronze of Augustus
Lot 513
ASIA MINOR. Uncertain. Augustus, 27 BC-AD 14. AE (Bronze, 15 mm, 2.51 g). CAESAR Bare head of Augustus to right. Rev. Star and crescent within dotted circle. Naumann 40 (2016), 478 and 48 (2017), 504, both desribed as RPC I 4876A in error. Rare and interesting. Earthen deposits, otherwise, very fine.

While RPC I 4876A is of similar design, not only is our coin of clearly different style, it also lacks any lettering on the reverse. There is, for the time being, no way to attribute it to a specific mint, although Asia Minor (or possibly Syria) appears to be a much more likely origin than Judaea
